HISTORY
The history of seaweed in Indonesia dates back centuries, with coastal communities relying on it as a crucial food source and incorporating it into traditional diets. In the late 20th century, the Indonesian government recognized the potential of seaweed farming and began promoting it as a sustainable livelihood option, particularly in regions like Sulawesi and Bali. This led to a significant increase in commercial cultivation, transforming Indonesia into one of the world’s largest seaweed producers. The industry not only supports local economies by providing jobs and income but also plays a vital role in environmental sustainability by helping to maintain coastal ecosystems. Despite challenges such as climate change and overfishing, the rich history of seaweed in Indonesia continues to evolve, blending traditional practices with modern economic opportunities.
